Big Moves Ahead: Enhancing the City's Multimodal Transportation Plan
Published on March 05, 2025
The City of Dunedin is updating its Multimodal Transportation Plan (MMTP). The goal of this update is to enhance and expand the current multimodal transportation system, which already supports walkers, bikers, and other alternative transportation users.
This project builds on the original Bicycle/Pedestrian Master Plan adopted in November 2011, which, while innovative at the time, lacked detailed goals, policies, and action steps for long-term implementation. The updated MMTP will incorporate actionable strategies and objectives, helping the city expand its network and improve existing facilities.
Key Project Elements
- Include an updated Bicycle Facilities and Recommendations Map showing constructed and planned facilities not identified on the current map and incorporate the map into the MMTP.
- Incorporate new practices and policies into the MMTP.
- Remove completed strategies and actions since the adoption of the MMTP in 2021.
Community Engagement: A Collaborative Effort
A comprehensive community engagement plan has been included in the MMTP update. This will involve:
Tentative Project Timeline
- January 2025 – March 2025: Bicycle policy and map updates; existing conditions analysis.
- January 2025 – April 2025: Community engagement activities, including a bicycle forum, stakeholder meetings, and online surveys.
- May 2025 – June 2025: Presentation to the City Commission
As these phases roll out, the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback and stay engaged with the project.
The Multimodal Transportation Plan update is not just about improving infrastructure; it’s about making Dunedin a more connected and sustainable community for future generations. Whether you're an avid cyclist, a pedestrian, or simply someone who enjoys the beauty of Dunedin’s streets and parks, these updates will enhance your experience, making travel easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
